The 84th Annual Academy Awards was held in Los Angeles and for the tenth year in a row, Architectural Digest produced the ceremony’s greenroom for presenters and honorees to relax in style. Here’s a look at this year and the past eight years of Green Rooms ...

Waldo Fernandez, AD100 interior designer, was selected to create the backstage lounge for the event and went with an old Hollywood theme featuring relaxed, elegant and festive tones throughout the room. 

2012

Designed by Waldo Fernandez. The bookcase featured different film clips made into covers for the books

Inspired by 1930s and ‘40s Hollywood, the exclusive backstage lounge at the 2012 Oscars is as glamorous as the stars on the red carpet. 

Two Moroccan carpets were used in the room over Hume floors from the California Classic Reserve Collection

 

  2011

 The concept this year is an elegant, 1940s-style , library with a sophisticated color palette and furnishings celebrating Hollywood's golden era. Designed by Michael S. Smith, the White House decorator. 

2010

82nd Annual Academy Awards Greenroom – Designer Roger Thomas designed the 2010 Greenroom around a custom paint-splattered floor

2009

81st Annual Academy Awards Greenroom – Designer Stephen Shadley used a photographic backdrop of the Los Angeles skyline for the focal point of the 2009 Greenroom, creating a lounge area similar to that of a 1970s modern home with a panoramic view of the city.

2008

President of Dorothy Draper & Co., Carleton Varney, was the mastermind behind the Green Room of the 80th Annual Academy Awards in 2008. He was inspired by Draper’s original sketches for the Beverly Hills Hotel and her 1940s design of the Arrowhead Springs Resort.

 2007 

Matthew White & Frank Webb teamed up with Global Green USA and the Natural Resources Defense Council to create an eco-friendly Greenroom for the 79th Oscars in 2007. I bet you can’t tell that the carpet is made out of recycled plastic bottles!

2006

In 2006, Roy and Dorothy transformed the Greenroom into an “intimate yet luxe lobby of a fantasy movie theater in honor of S. Charles Lee, the prolific designer of legendary theaters”.

2005

The Christophers had Diana Vreeland in mind when they created the Greenroom for the 77th Annual Academy Awards in 2005.

 2004

In 2004, Dorothy and Roy (also a former television set designer) wanted the 76th Greenroom to be a contemporary take on the Hollywood Regency style.

2003

Roy Christopher – veteran art director of the Academy Awards telecast – and his wife Dorothy designed the first four Architectural Digest Green Rooms. For the 75th Annual Academy Awards in 2003, the Christophers created a space they described as “a tip of the hat to the glamorous settings from Hollywood’s Golden Age.”
