La Concha Resort, Puerto Rico

A paragon of midcentury tropicalia, this twin-tower urban resort got a full update in the aughts courtesy of architect José R. Marchand and designer Jorge Rosselló. The centerpiece is the buzzy open-air lobby, a soothing sea of marble, low-slung white sofas, an undulating ceiling and whimsical art.

The 483 rooms in the original hotel tower offer floor-to-ceiling views with minimalist interiors (think blond wood dressers, crisp white linens) while the new tower (opened in 2010) houses 235 studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites with kitchenettes, terraces and separate living areas. All rooms have bathrooms with spa-like showers.

By day the lobby serves as a breezy welcome and coffee spot. By night it morphs into a pulsing nightspot with strong cocktails and an intimate sushi bar. The glass walls open onto the pools, which spill down into one another by a waterfall. Guests laze here on daybeds sampling delicious tapas and fruity cocktails.
